I led cross-device interaction design for Amazon’s Second Screen experience, which let people control and move video, music, and photos between Amazon’s Echo, Fire tablets, Fire Phone, and Fire TV. I partnered with several design and engineering teams to define the core interaction patterns and make the experience consistent across very different devices and media types.

A key challenge was creating one system that made sense across four device families and three types of content, each with its own quirks and constraints. We wanted to create familiar and predictable controls, but use-cases and expectations were different for each application. For example, when the app should maintain remote control versus defaulting to local playback.
I designed a shared framework for moving and monitoring media across devices; these included in-app device switching controls and global playback notifications. I then worked closely with the individual product teams to apply the patterns across products while using a consistent set of cues to orient the customer in cases of cross-application behavior differences.
